Start dieting now; more seats crammed into Fenway

The Red Sox are increasing capacity at Fenway Park by about 900 fans for next season, but you and I still won't be able to get tickets.

The team is adding more than 800 seats and about 60 standing room spots, according to the Associated Press.

Just when it appeared that the Sox had fit all the seats they could into the the tiny, urban ballpark, the owners somehow found room for more.

Does this mean some fortunate fan with a fat wallet will be able to sit right next to David Ortiz on the Red Sox bench?

Will fans in the front row be able to share their hot dogs with Jason Varitek?

The Sox apparently wanted to make this announcement early enough to give their season ticket holders time to lose some weight. It's going to be crowded at the old ballyard.

Well, I will tell you that as much as I LOVE FENWAY, catching a Sox game at Turner Field or Camden Yards is pretty awesome, too. Modern Facilities, and believe it or not, the fans at both places are about 1/2 to 2/3 Red Sox fans (all the transplants and traveling fans because there are no tix at Fenway).

With Southwest Flying into BWI and Airtran (out of Logan) flying into Atlanta, I'm telling you, you can make a nice weekend out of it and it will cost you less than trying to get tix at Fenway from a scalper.

My husband and I and another couple made a "road trip" of our quest to see a Sox game. We drove up to Cooperstown, toured the Hall of Fame and had lunch, then drove up to Niagara falls...saw the falls from both sides, stayed overnight, and then drove on up to Toronto. We had purchased tickets online for game 1 of a 3-game series. Had a bit of trouble getting a hotel room (that we did NOT book ahead) because of the International Film Festival in town, but found a brand new hotel about 20 minutes out. Before we left the park, we inquired about tickets to the next night's game. We were told to just come to the window and basically have our pick! We did just that and got tickets for $26 Canadian - which then was about $21 American. We got seats two rows from the outfield - within conversation distance to Manny Ramirez!

Long story short...do consider taking a "road trip" to see our beloved Sox play for far less than you will pay in Boston...AND see part of North America while you do it!
