David and Victoria Beckham arrive in the U.S.

"Do you think the Sox can hold off the Yankees?"

The question came from an old friend, somebody I hadn't seen in a while.

"Sure, I guess, the Sox are leading by something like 10 games, aren't they?," I replied.

"Ten? The lead is down to six. The Yankees have been playing great," he said.

"Really? I didn't notice. I haven't really been following the Sox since David Beckham got here last month," I told him.

"David Beckham? The soccer player?"

"Yes, the savior, the guy who's making soccer relevant in the United States. He had me when he said hello to Tom Cruise."

"Didn't you used to make fun of soccer?"

"That was B.B., Before Beckham. Now I'm the game's number one fan. I used to hang on every no-comment from Bill Belichick and try to decipher the true meaning behind every tight-lipped reply uttered at his press conferences. Now the only team I care about in Foxboro is the Revolution. Beckham's supposed to play against them Sunday night."

"OK, name me one player on the Revolution."

"There's the player with the shaggy red hair and long beard, looks like the guy from Scooby Doo in soccer shorts."

"Alexi Lallas? He doesn't play for them anymore. He's the general manager for Beckham's team, the L.A. Galaxy."

"Really?"

"Okay, do you know the difference between a direct free kick and an indirect free kick?"

"I know that Beckham is married to one of the Spice Girls, and they've got their own line of fragrances."

"You don't really know anything about soccer, do you?"

"I do know that the Beckhams have come from England to make soccer the next best thing in the United States, and we're all supposed to jump on the band wagon."

as a rhode islander and even more specific as an East Bay resident it is shameful to not like soccer. some great players have come thru towns like bristol and barrington through the years in addition to thriving youth leagues throughout the state. ignorance is bliss, until you are trying to catch up to all us happy soccer fans in a few years.

Hello,While I am not well versed in soccer or tennis or even baseball {which I love} I am well versed in why The score is never high enough!
And by that I mean my credit score!
I am a single mom of 1 She is my life and her daddy died in may!
we are now looking for an apt in warwickor the surrounding area I want her to attend a better school then Woonsocket middle school.
I am not rich nor have I ever been.
I also don't have family to call upon for finiacial help or much emotional support for that matter.
Every where I turn I am told that my credit score means no apartment.try to explain to an 11 year old that we can't move anywhere better because you have no credit and or that the score is only 560 -610 it sucks.I don't understand so how could she?
when her Dad died I promised to do my very best with her and to raise her in a good enviroment and make sure she gets the very best education.well suffice to say It is near impossible.I can't find a place to give us a chance .I love my daughter and we cannot afford privat school even though she is a great student.I just want to do right by her and by her dad{my best friend.} well I guess this is Rhode Island and it is only if you have a perfect Score and loads of money.

Hi Jack,
Funny blog on the Beckhams.
Sox-Yankees, Bruins-Habs, Pats-Cots, Revolution-Galaxy.... it could happen.

Hope all is well with you... from a Cape Cod Times alum as yourself... Ron Recinto
