With any luck, we New England baseball fans will celebrate another World Series championship shortly before Thanksgiving this year. Won't that make mom's turkey and stuffing taste even better? Major League Baseball is starting the World Series later this year, and for the first time, the Series could continue into November, with Game 7 scheduled for Nov. 1. That's right. The fall classic is evolving into the winter classic. Even big guys like David Ortiz won't have trouble sliding if there's ice on the bases. The Series won't start until Wednesday, Oct. 24, three days after the league championship series finish. Baseball decided to start the games on Wednesday instead of Tuesday because more people watch television later in the week. Who cares if the Series interferes with trick-or-treating or even Christmas shopping as long as the sponsors are happy? Thanksgiving is Nov. 22 this year. If enough games are snowed out, we could watch baseball instead of football while we're trying to digest our pumpkin pie. With the Sox leading their division by 8 1/2 games today, some of my more optimistic friends and co-workers are already making their Series plans. Could this be the year the Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs meet in the World Series? And you thought Boston was cold in November. So what happens if the Sox do make the World Series? Will Josh Beckett suffer from frostbitten fingers instead of blisters? Will Manny Ramirez have to seek refuge in the Green Monster to prevent hypothermia and not just for a bathroom break? Will little Dustin Pedroia get lost in a snow drift near second base? |
