I guess it's no surprise that Cliff Clavin moves better on a barstool than he does on a dance floor. But who knew that singer Billy Ray Cyrus did his best dancing in the early 1990s during the video for his one-hit wonder song "Achy Breaky Heart?" Cyrus or actor John Ratzenberger, who played Clavin in the television series Cheers, is likely to get booted off the dance floor this week in ABC's Dancing with the Stars, which airs tonight at 8 p.m. and tomorrow at 9 p.m. They surprisingly outlasted Paul McCartney's ex-wife, Heather Mills, who was sent back to England last week, even though she moves better on one leg than Cyrus and Ratzenberger do on two. With fans voting, it apparently came down to a popularity contest. Cyrus and Ratzenberger had an advantage over Mills in that neither of them has ever divorced a member of The Beatles. Yes, Dancing with the Stars has hooked me again. When it happened two years ago, I blamed my wife and mother-in-law. (Read my original take on the show.) This time I blame Laila Ali. Even with its liberal use of the word 'stars' (See Heather Mills), it's a difficult show to take your eyes off. (See Ali.) I've wondered if they'd quickly run out of so-called stars to put through the steps of the samba and the cha cha, but there was a development last week that gives me hope the show can continue: President Bush dancing at the White House. Maybe Bush can go on the show after his term expires. He dances almost as well as Ratzenberger and Cyrus, but I wonder if he'll prove more popular than Mills. |
