Watch out, you mice, squirrels and rabbits, here comes Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential candidate and mighty hunter. Romney, who supported gun control laws as Massachusetts governor, but joined the NRA as a "Lifetime" member in August, struggled this week in his effort to convince gun owners of his hunting cred.
Romney
Romney characterized himself as a lifelong hunter Tuesday, but on Wednesday his campaign acknowledged that he has been on just two hunting trips -- one when he was 15 and the other last year, according to the Associated Press. As the Associated Press wrote, Romney took another "shot" at explaining himself yesterday. But his hunting tale is sounding more and more like a fish tale.
Clampett
"I'm not a big-game hunter. I've made that very clear," he said. "I've always been a rodent and rabbit hunter. Small varmints, if you will. I began when I was 15 or so and I have hunted those kinds of varmints since then. More than two times." "Rodents" and "varmints"? Is Jed Clampett of The Beverly Hillbillies going to be our next president? It's probably bad form for a presidential candidate to mention only a few days before Easter that he hunted rabbit, but bunnies are apparently the most impressive animals on his resume. Don't expect to see any wild boar's heads hanging in the den of the Romney summer place in New Hampshire -- at least none that were shot by Mitt. |
