Easter Bunny wins in a landslide

The Easter Bunny might want to consider adding his (her?) name to the long list of candidates vying for the 2008 presidential nomination. (Or maybe the Easter Bunny has already announced. It's hard to keep track without a list.)

A projo.com survey asking readers whether they agree with the Tiverton school superintendent's decision to ban the Easter Bunny from a school fair has drawn responses from 1054 readers since we posted it March 23. The overwhelming number 912, or 86.5 percent, voted in favor of the Easter Bunny.

Wouldn't Hillary Clinton or Mitt Romney like to boast those approval numbers?

A lot of readers were miffed by Superintendent William Rearick's decision to replace the Easter Bunny with Peter Rabbit out of concern that the Easter Bunny was promoting a particular religion. (Of course, Peter Rabbit comes with his own baggage, as we noted in a previous blog entry.)

"What does the Easter Bunny have to do with religion anyway? The Easter Bunny means baskets full of candy, eggs and Easter egg hunts. The kids love it," wrote one reader.

Another wrote, "Let's eliminate Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy, cancel Thanksgiving, take away everyone's birthday, pray for rain on the 4th of July, and do away with Halloween. Give all of us a break, and get a life!!"

The ban is even prompting state Rep. Richard W. Singleton, R-Cumberland, to submit a bill today that would make it illegal for municipal governing bodies to alter the names, concepts and symbols associated with religious or secular holidays.

“This is the type of thing that drives the average person crazy,” said Singleton, who nicknamed his bill the "Easter Bunny Act."

Seems ironic that Tiverton Public School have no problem taking the day OFF on Good Friday. What's the number of Rep Singleton's bill, so I can be sure to tell my local reps to vote yes.

if they are going for political correctness, than they cannot rename the Easter Bunny becasue it is a cristan symbol for it is not! the cristans really have nothing to do with the rabbit. the rabbit is a pagan symbol used in beltan. it symbolizes fertility. the only reason it is associated with Easter is becasue a long time ago the catholics took over the pagan holidays, masked them, in a hope to convert pagans and keep others in the dark as to what the original holiday was.

THe fact that we must submit bills to protect traditions is ludicrous. In our attempt to guarentee freedoms in our country we are in fact curtailing them.

The traditions are reasons to celebrate, to be happy. Without them we lose valuable time to bond in some way. The lack of bonding is in fact destroying our culture not giving individual freedom.

It seems that the liberal establishment continues to destroy all of our traditions, just like its know trying to do with the easter bunny for kids. Leave the kids alone to the school supertendant. What's next? Crosses on churches?

In the South, it was ruled to ban the Civil War Flag? Because it was racist and hurt feelings. But, we celebrate Black history month? We don't have a White history month? That would be racist?
The Public is banned from saying Merry Christmas? We are pushing our faith? Now the Easter Bunny?
We live in America, the land of Freedom, Free to bare arms, and I thought Freedom of Speech? Those that can't accept history as it is, and always will be without sueing over some petty reason.... should get on a plane and fly out! There are many countries that ban liberties to choose from.

How sad, for all of us for a group of "leaders" to even have such a thought process. I learned about my peers customs, religions and traditions at school through my music classes, social studies classes and the signs up all over the school to celebrate the holiday of the month. I grew up catholic and still am; nothing changed my religion but I did learn a lot about the beliefs and tradidions of others. Isn't that what our country is all about? Get a grip all you small, narrow minded whimps.

The Rabbit as a symbol of Easter was taken from Celtic mythology and appropriated by the Christian church. In a similar manner was the goddess Estrus' name appropriated so that a "pagan" ceremony could coincide with something that christians could appropriate to get the population to celebrate an event that was important to them.

The Easter bunny represents rebirth, but not of man but of the earth cycle.

Appears that this person feels threatened by the Easter Bunny and certain religions, I am curious what his religious beliefs are! How trivial and ridicules our system has become when one person is able to change something that is so special to children. Lets also take out most children’s books like Snow White and the seven Dwarfs; after all there is an evil queen that creates and apple with evil intent. Peter Rabbit? Easter Bunny? Give me a break, that person should be fired. For what reasons you ask! Obviously that person doesn’t have enough important things to occupy his/her time, and anyone that feels threatened by a tame Easter Bunny should join the ACLU. If my child was attending that school, they wouldn’t much longer after this display of stupidity.
Gotta go now, I think I am being Watched

Wait a minute. they want to take away "Easter" in Easter Bunny and replace it with "Peter" Rabitt.

Isn't "Peter" one of Jesus' desciples?

These PC people need to get a life.

Too much sentiment, not enough truth. A little digging into the Easter bunny's roots, and one would find he's anything but Christian. He's an old fertility symbol for a pagan goddess ... True Christians don't have anything to do with these pagan stand-in's.

I fined it very disturbing that people can live in this country and tell us how to conduct our affairs. America was founded as a Christian nation and that is who we are. It is our heritage. It is our identity. It is what gives us continuiy. Still, no one has taken any rights away from any other religions. In fact, we have given everyone the freedom to practice his or her own religion. Now, that liberty is being used against us. To me, freedom of religion does not mean banning christian traditions. Please, point out to me where the constitution states anything about the freedom to rob America of the right to be a Christian nation. All in all, if we take head to every complaint, the only real fix would be to get rid of public schools and have hundreds of private schools that cater to the needs of each individual.

Good Morning,

Could the school who banned the Easter Bunny to be more conscientous to others backgrounds and religiona (but the Easter Bunny is not part of a religion) please be a little conscientous of my background too? I was born in the USA lived my whole life in the USA, have paid taxes on all my income, have lived by the laws governing the USA, I honor the American Flag, I support our Armed Forces, have relatives in Irag, try to help others less fortunate, why don't I count?

I would like to be exceptionaly blunt and summ up all the arguments, debates and blogs on this and all subjects dealing with the "political corectness" issues and "my rights are violated or I am offended", people or groups. Very simply this is a country of freedoms and unless it is directly harmfull and cannot be avoided or bypassed and accepted leave it be. this latest stupidity with the Easter Bunny please people get a life and change the channel.

If the majority rules in our country and the majority of people in this country are Christians, why are we allowing this ridiculous stuff to continue? We are a Christian country, so why do we have to change to satisfy the minority? It's time we stand up for ourselves and tell the minority to sit down and shut up!!!

Annie said:

Easter and the Easter bunny are not Christian; they are pagan. The Christian holiday is Resurrection Sunday, and the symbol would more likely be the Cross.

this political correctness stuff is getting old.everybody is worried about offending other religious cultures, well what about all of us people that celebrate our traditional holidays here in the united states,we have done this for generations,so now all of a sudden our holidays are wrong?we cant say the pledge of allegance in scool because it has god in it? well i"m offended because a small minority in this country wants to change something that has been good for 200 plus years.people WAKE UP STAND FOR WHAT IS RIGHT!!!

I am sick of "whoever" these people are that are trying to destroy "TRADITIONS" of this country, of the people...starting with the:
"OFFICAL LANGUAGE: "ENGLISH" and...: "CHRISTMAS...EASTER...THE PLEDGE OF ALLIGIANCE" ...just to name a few!
TO:
" ONE COUNTRY UNDER GOD""
IF YOU DONT LIKE IT: L_E_A_V_E !!!!
POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IS A BUNCH OF C-R-A-P, just like the POLITICIANS and the whoevers that "ALLOW" these "whoevers " to take charge and demand changes...
Go back to wherever you came from and DEMAND changes there!!!!
My family came here to build this country to live and enjoy their traditons, learned the language, made a home, taught us to live by the rules, and be decent citizens.. and not to infringe on what anyone believes , but to embrace the fact that we all believe in something...how in this hell that has been created by those who are so stupid can enable us live together in this country if these people are so so blinded, so afraid, to live and learn about who we are as people...stop the fighting, stop the ignorance, and let freedom ring!!!!
AMEN !

First of all, the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and the like are not the problem. The problem is bringing religious festivities into public arenas. Stop doing that, and the problems will go away. Freedom of religion means ALL religions. Celebrate all, or celebrate none.

Secondly, this is not a Christian nation. Never has been. Some of our Founding Fathers were Christian....yes. Many more were Deists. Look it up if you don't know the meaning of the word. There is no mention of Christ or the Christian God in the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence. "In God We Trust" was nothing more a knee-jerk reaction to the Red Scare of the 1950s, as was the addition of God to the Pledge of Allegiance.

Those of you who are so vehemently opposed to keeping your religious celebrations private....how would you feel about a Muslim celebration at your child's school? What about a Wiccan ritual? What if an atheist family wanted to celebrate Darwin Day in your child's classroom. How about a Buddhist meditation? If you can honestly say that you wouldn't be bothered, then you aren't a hypocrite. If you admit that it would disturb you, then you know how non-Christians feel whenever you assume that everyone celebrates your holidays.

Lastly, the Easter Bunny IS a religious icon. It's Pagan, and Pagan religions are still practiced in 2007. Bunnies, eggs, hot cross buns, and sunrise services all have ancient roots in Pagan spring festivals. Even the very word "Easter" comes from an Anglo-Saxon fertility goddess....Oestre or Ostara. Maybe Christians should focus on the rebirth of Christ during their holiday, and leave the nature worship (rebirth of Earth in the spring) to the Pagans.
